The total distance covered by  in that single day was 47 1/2

⇒ The next step is to add up the individual distances:

Scooter - 29 1/3 km

Bicycle - 8 5/6

Total :   29 1/3 +  8 5/6  = 37 (  2+ 5)/6

                                      =  37 7/6

                                      = 38  1/6   km

⇒Next step and final step: subtract from the total, the remaining distance will be the distance covered on foot.

47 1/2 - 38 1/6   = 9  (3 - 1)/6

                          =
9 2/6

                          = 9 1/3

Therefore the man covered 9 1/3 km on foot.

A man travelled 47 1/2 km in one day .
e.g.,total distance covered by man = 47 1/2 km = 95/2 km
distance is covered by scooter = 29 1/3 km = 88/3 km
distance is covered by bicycle = 8 5/6 = 53/6 km

Let rest distance x is covered by him on foot .
Then, total distance = distance covered by scooter + distance covered by bicycle + distance covered on foot
95/2 km = 88/3 km + 53/6 + x
95/2 - 88/3 - 53/6 = x
(95 × 3 - 88 × 2)/6 - 53/6 = x
(285 - 176)/6 - 53/6 = x
109/6 - 53/6 = x
x = (109-53)/6 = 56/6 = 28/3 = 9 1/3 km
Hence, distance covered on foot = 109/6 = 9 1/3 km
