GIVEN

A man travelled 5 km from west to east then 5 km towards north and finally 7 km towards east.

\underline{\rule{200}2}

TO FIND

The displacement of the man and the distance covered by the man.

\underline{\rule{200}2}

SOLUTION

Distance covered is the length of the total path between the initial point and the final position.

Displacement is the shortest length of the path between the initial point and the final position.

\rule{150}2

For the total displacement :-

(refer to the attachment above↑)

The total displacement would be AE.

  • CE = 7 km

⇒7 = CD + DE

⇒7 = 5 + DE

⇒DE = 2 km

In ΔADE,

  • AD = 5 km
  • DE = 2 km
  • EA = ?

Using Pythagoras Theorem,

EA² = AD² + DE²

⇒EA² = (5)² + (2)²

⇒EA = √(25 + 4)

⇒EA = √29

⇒EA(Displacement) = 5.4 km (Approx.)

\rule{150}2

For distance travelled :-

Total distance covered = 5 + 5 + 7 = 17 km
