A man travelled a distance of 50 km in 8 hours. He travelled partly on foot at 5 km/hr and partly on bicycle at 7 km/hr. What is the distance (in kms) travelled on foot?

  • Let x be the distance travelled by foot and

  • Y be the distance travelled by bicycle

Given that

  • , the total distance travelled by a man is 50 km in 8 hours , partly on foot and on bicycle

  • So, the first equation is x+y=50………..(1)

We know that the formula,

  • time =distance/speed

  • So , x/5+y/7=8hours

  • or 7x+5y=280….(2)

  • By solving these two equations we get the distance travelled by man on foot

  • Therefore, the distance travelled by a man on foot is 15km
