A man travels at 3 mph in still water. If the current’s velocity is 1 mph, it takes 3 hours to row to a place and come back. How far is the place?​

Let the distance of the place be x.

So, the amount of time the man takes while going upstream = x/(3-1) = x/2

and, the amount of time the man takes while going downstream = x/(3+1) = x/4

Now, total time = 3 hours = (x/2) + (x/4)

3x/4 = 3

x = 4 miles
