A man walks on a straight road from his home to a post office letter box, 1 km away with a speed of 1 m/s. Dropping a letter immediately turns and runs back home with a speed of 2 m/s. What is the magnitude of average velocity and the average speed for the whole path.

Answer:

let , time be t

In 1st case,

distance, s = 1km=1000m

speed , v is 1 m/s

time, t (a)= 1000 sec

In 2nd case.

distance , s= 1000m

speed=2m/s

time, t(b) =1000/2=500sec

total distance is 2000 m

total time is 1500 sec

total displacement is 0m

so, average speed is total distance/total time=4/3 m/s

average velocity is displacement /time=0
