A man wants to cut three pieces from a single piece of board of length 47m. The second piece is to be 3m longer than the shortest one and the third piece is to be twice as long as the shortest piece. What are the possible lengths of the shortest board if the third piece is to be at least 5m longer than the second?

Let the smallest piece be x.

therefore, second piece = x+3

third piece = 2x

If we add all the pieces , they must sum up to 47m

So, x + (x+3) + 2x = 47
or , 4x+3 = 47
or, 4x = 47-3
or, 4x = 44
or, x = 44/4
or, x = 11m

so, smallest piece x = 11m

second piece (x+3) = 11+3 = 14m

Third piece (2x) = 2×11 = 22m

Answer ) Smallest piece is 11m and the other pieces are 14m and 22m
