The rifle is to be aimed at the monkey directly.

The monkey falls down the tree with the same acceleration due to gravity as the bullet.  Assuming that the speed of the monkey in the vertical direction is negligible, both of the bullet and monkey fall down the same distance.   So the bullet hits the monkey.

shiprachandra: Are you sure about this?
kvnmurty: If the monkey jumps down toward the ground with no vertical speed, then this is the correct solution...
kvnmurty: If the monkey jumps with some speed downwards, then the rifle should be aimed a little lower..
kvnmurty: this is the question relate to acceleration due to gravity, and kinematics..
shiprachandra: Ok
shiprachandra: Thanks
