40²+9²=1600+81=1681
L=√1681
L=41

Here we have to find the length of the ladder.So the length of ladder = Hypotenuse .P square +B square= H sq.
40 sq.+9 sq. =H sq.
1600+81= H sq.
1681 = H sq.
therefore 1681 root square =H
1681 root = 41 
 So the length of ladder is 41 feet
