A man was the proud owner of a small two-seater aeroplane. His

greatest joy was to fly over the city and do tricks, flying upside

down and other stunts. He loved to look down and see all the

upturned face of the crowds of people, all watching him and

admiring his skill and daring. It made him feel great.

One day, this man took his friend up for a ride. The friend had

never been in an aeroplane before and he was very nervous. He

held firmly on to the seat, certain that every moment would be his

last, as the aeroplane flew in all possible ways.

Then the pilot did his greatest stunt. Switching off the engine, he

did a “falling leaf” dive. The little plane silently fluttered from side

to side, falling lower and lower. The pilot could see thousands of

upturned faces in the street below.

When only a few feet above the roofs of the houses, he switched on

the engine, and roared away safely into the sky. Turning to his

friend, he said with a laugh – “That was wonderful. I bet fifty

percent of the people down there thought that we were going to

crash”. His friend replied in a small, scared voice: y-y-yes. And

fifty percent of the people up here thought so, too!”
