Given : A manufacturer knows that the condensers he makes contain on an average 1% of defective.

He packs them in boxes of 100.

To Find : What is the probability that a box picked at random will contain 4 or more faulty condensers.

Solution:

Probability of defective p = 1 % = 0.01

probability of non defective  q= 1 - 0.01 = 0.99

n = 100

P(x) = ⁿCₓpˣqⁿ⁻ˣ

probability that a box picked at random will contain 4 or more faulty condensers.

= 1 - P(0) - P(1) - P(2) - P(3)

P(0) =  ¹⁰⁰C₀(0.01)⁰(0.99)¹⁰⁰  = 0.3660

P(1) =  ¹⁰⁰C₁(0.01)¹(0.99)⁹⁹  =    0.3697

P(2) =  ¹⁰⁰C₂(0.01)²(0.99)⁹⁸  =  0.1849

P(3) =  ¹⁰⁰C₃(0.01)³(0.99)⁹⁷  =   0.061

probability that a box picked at random will contain 4 or more faulty condensers.  = 0.0184
