A mass m supported by a massless string wound around a uniform hollow cylinder of mass m and radius R . if the string does not slip on the cylinder , with what acceleration will the mass fall On release ? [ Jee main 2014]​

Explanation :- For the mass m ,

  • mg - T = ma

As we know , a = R α

so, mg - T = mRα _____(I)

As torque = T × R = mR²α _____(II)

From equ (I) and (II) we get

  • mg - mRα = mRα
  • mg = 2mRα
  • α= g/2R
  • But we know that α = a/R
  • a/R = g/2R
  • ∴ a = g/2

Hence, the acceleration with the mass of a body is g/2 .
