A mass of 100 g strikes the wall with a
speed of 5 m s-1 at an angle as shown
in figure and it rebounds with the same
speed. If the contact time is 2 × 10-3 s.
what is the force applied by the wall ?

Answer:

GIVEN :

mass=100g

Speed=5m/s

Angle=60degrees

Contact time=2*10^-3 s

TO FIND :

The force applied by the wall

SOLUTION :

To calculate the force

Initial momentum p1=mv sin theta i+mv cos theta j

Fimnal momentum p2= -mv sin theta i +mv cos theta j

WHERE,

P1 ; P2 - initial and final momentum

m - mass

v - speed

Therefore,

Force=change in momentum /change in time

delta p/delta t

-2mv sin theta/2*10^-3

Substituting the values,

We get,

-2 (0.1)(5) sin 60/2*10^-3

FORCE=-250 ROOT 3

The negative sign indicated the opposite direction of the force.

Hence,the force applied by the wall is -250 root 3

Hope this helps you
