A mature blue whalemay have a length of 28 m. How far from a concave mirror with a focal lengthof 30 m must a 7 m long baby blue whale be placed to get a real image the size of a mature bluewhale? Draw the ray diagram.

Height of object=7 m

focal length=-30 m

V= Image distance

U= Object distance

Magnification= Height of Image/Height of object

                      = 28/7

                      = negative 4

#Negative because magnification of a real image is always negative.

So,

Height of Image/Height of object= -v/u

-4= -v/u

-v= -4u

v= 4u       -1 st equation

Using Mirror Formula:

1/v+1/u=1/f    -2nd equation

putting 1 in 2

1/4u+1/u=1/-30

1+4/4u= -1/30

5/4u= -1/30

-4u=150

u= -150/4

u= -37.5 m
