The length of the handle required  is 1 meter.

Explanation:

Given:

Mechanic can open a nut by applying a force of 160 N.

Lever handle of length 50 cm.

Mechanic  wants to apply the force of only 80 N.

To Find:

The length of the handle required.

Solution:

As given,mechanic can open a nut by applying a force of 160 N.

Force applied by mechanic,F= 160 N

As given,lever handle of length 50 cm.

Length of lever, d = 50 cm = 0.5 m

Torque, T =F\times d

                =160\times 0.5\\=80\ Nm

As given, mechanic  wants to apply the force of only 80 N.

Now, if the mechanic applies a force, R = 80 N

Let S be the length of the lever to produce the same torque.

Then  T=R\times S

         80=80\times S

          S= \frac{80}{80} =1 \ meter.

Thus,the length of the handle required is 1 meter.
