A mechanic strikes a nail with hammer moving with a velocity of 20 m/s. The
hammer comes to rest in 0.02 seconds after striking the nail. Calculate the
acceleration of the nail.

initial velocity of hammer, u = 20 m/s

final velocity of hammer, V = 0 [ the hammer comes to rest]

To find acceleration , a

time, t = 0.02 s = 2/100 s

We have,

a = (V - u) / t

= ( 0 - 20) / (2/100)

= - 20 * (100/2)

= -1000

reqd. acceleration = -1000 m/s^2
