A merchant can place 8 large boxes or 10 small boxes into a carton for shipping in one shipment; he sent a total of 96 boxes. If there are more large boxes than small boxes, how many cartoons did he ship

Let x & y be no of large boxes & small boxes respectively.

To find out value of x and y, we have to fullfil these two conditions -

x + y = 96

x > y

x/8 & y/10 => Whole numbers

Only values of x & y that fulfill all three conditions are x = 56 & y = 40.

No of cartons sent in a shipment -

Cartons = x/8 + y/10

Cartons = 56/8 + 40/10

Cartons = 7 + 4

Cartons = 11

Therefore, total of 11 cartons are sent by merchant.
