A merchant loses large sum of money means he has lost all his assets and gone bankrupt. This may be due to failure of his company owing to poor performance or even due to some scams involved or may be due to large loans which turned bad debts.

This is about a boy who was trusted with all the money by his family and all the collections were handed to him to look after, but he lost that large some of the money. But he is blamed for stealing the money and spending it in speculation and gambling but it in actual this is not the case, he actually lost all the money maybe someone stole it.
