Given,

A merchant purchased 500 coconuts at rate of rupees 4 per coconut out of these 40 coconuts were damaged he sell the remaining coconuts at 5 per coconut.

Cost price of 500 coconuts at the rate of rupees 4=500\times4

= 2000

Out of 500 coconuts 40 coconuts were damaged

So,

Remaining coconuts = 500-40=460

He sell remaining at 5 per coconut = 460\times5

= 2300

Profit = Cost price of 460 coconuts - Cost price of 500 coconuts

Profit = 2300-2000

= 300

Profit% = \frac{300}{2000}\times100

=15%

Therefore, he get 15% profit.
