A metal A,which is used in thermit process ,when heated with oxygen gives an oxide B,which is amphoteric in nature.Identify A and B.Write down the reaction of oxide B with HCl and NaOH.

Thermite is a mixture of rust and aluminium in the ratio 3 : 1 . As per the question,we use RAW ALUMINIUM powder as the metal.

•)Aluminium generally forms amphoteric oxide when reacted with oxygen.

•)When this aluminium oxide (Al2O3) reacts with dilute HCL,it forms aluminium chloride (AlCl3) and H2O .

•)When Aluminium oxide reacts with NaOH,then it forms (2NaAlO2) and H2O as products.

•)Al2O3 +HCl =AlCl3 +H2O

•)Al2O3 + 2NaOH = 2NaAlO2 + H2O
