A metal compound X reacts with dil. HCl to produce

effervescences. The gas evolved is colorless, odourless and

turns limewater milky. Identify the gas evolved. If excess

gas is passed through limewater, milky color disappear and

the solution becomes clear and form compound Y. Identify

X and Y. Give balanced chemical equations.

Answer:

X is Carbon dioxide gas. Y is calcium bi- carbonate.

Explanation:

As we take metal compound as ZnCO3 .ZnCO3(aq)+ HCl(Dil.) - Zncl2 (aq.) + H2O(l)+CO2(g) now the formula of lime water is, Ca(OH)2 + CO2(g) - CaCO3 (s) +H2 now excessive of CO2 will diappear the milkiness of the solution as Calcium bi- carbonate is formed. The formula of calcium bi-carbonate is Ca (HCO3)2.
