because when metal combines with sulphuric acid hydrogen gas evolve

the gas formed is hydrogen because on reacting with an acid like sulphuric acid ,metal displaces hydrogen in the acid solution and metal salt and hydrogen gas is formed
for example - Zn+H2SO4=ZnSO4+H2
i.e.,metal +acid=metal salt+hydrogen
