The metal M is zinc.

Its ore i.e. Zinc carbonate is first of all converted into its oxide by Calcination.

Calcination is the process in which the substance is heated in limited supply of air.

ZnCO2 ---∆----->. ZnO + CO

This zinc oxide is then reduced with Carbon... Process commonly called as Smelting.

ZnO + C -------> Zn + CO

Hence, the metal zinc is obtained.
