A metal " M " is used in making containers of dry cell. "M" reacts with silver nitrate solution to form a colourless compound "N" and a lustrous metal "O" is formed.

a.Identify "M", "N" and "O"

b. Write the chemical reaction involved.

c. Which is more reactive "m" or "o" ? Give reason.

To find:-

  • Identify "M" , "N" and "O"
  • Write chemical reaction
  • Which is more reactive "M" or "O"

Solution:-

Metal M is used in making dry cell. Generally Zinc is used in making dry cell . Also Zinc is more reactive than silver it can displace silver from silver nitrate. Hence M = Zinc

Now When Zinc react with Silver nitrate hence reaction will be-

\large\mathtt\red{Zn+AgNO_3 \rightarrow Ag+ZnNO_3}

The new product formed is ZnNO_3 also it is colourless Hence "N"=ZnNO_3

Now another product formed is Ag(silver) which is also lustrous Hence "O"= Ag

\divideontimes Chemical reaction involved:-

\large\mathtt\green{Zn+AgNO_3 \rightarrow Ag+ZnNO_3}

\divideontimes Which is more reactive M or O:-

M is zinc and O is Silver hence M(zinc) is more reactive.Because M lies above O in reactivity series O is stable than M hence M is more reactive
