A metal M which is one of the best conductors of heat and electricity used in making electric wires is found in nature as sulphide ore,M2S
1)Name the metal
2)which process will be suitable for the extraction of this metal from its ore M2S?write the balanced chemical equations involved.
3)with help of a labelled diagram, explain the process of electrolytic refining of the metal

Hey there,

● Answers -
(i) Copper.
Copper is used to make electric wires and usually found as sulphide ore Cu2S.

(ii) Roasting -
Copper is extracted from its sulphide ore by roasting.

2Cu2S + O2 ---> 2Cu2O + 2SO2
2Cu2O + Cu2S ---> 6Cu + SO2

(iii) Electrolytic refining of copper -
- It involves electrolysis of copper sulphate solution with copper electrodes.
- It involves impure copper anode and pure cooper is deposited at cathode.

At anode, Cu ---> Cu2+ + 2e-
At cathode, Cu2+ + 2e- ---> Cu

Hope this helps you...

"(i) Element M is Copper

Roasting:\quad 2{ Cu }_{ 2 }S\quad +\quad 3{ O }_{ 2 }\quad \rightarrow \quad 2{ Cu }_{ 2 }O\quad +2{ SO }_{ 2 }

Bassemerisation:\quad C{ u }_{ 2 }S\quad +\quad 2{ Cu }_{ 2 }O\quad \rightarrow \quad 6\quad Cu\quad +\quad S{ O }_{ 2 }

(ii) It is concentrated  by  froth - flotaion process Impured form of copper  is purified by electrolytic refining.

(iii) Impure\quad metal\quad is\quad taken\quad a\quad anode\quad whereas\quad pure\quad metal\quad is\quad taken\quad as\quad cathode.

Insolube\quad salt\quad of\quad metal\quad is\quad taken\quad as\quad electrolyte.

When electric current is  passed, impure metal  changes  to ions which gain\quad electrons  at  cathode and  change  into  pure  metal

Impurities\quad are\quad left\quad behind\quad at\quad anode.

The\quad chemical\quad reactions\quad occurs\quad at\quad anode\quad and\quad cathode\quad is\quad as\quad follows.

At anode: M(s)\quad \quad \quad \rightarrow \quad { M }^{ n+ }\quad (aq)\quad +\quad n{ e }^{ - }

\quad \quad \quad \quad \quad \quad \quad \quad Impure

At\quad cathode\quad :\quad \quad \quad { M }^{ n+ }\quad (aq)\quad +\quad n{ e }^{ - }\quad \rightarrow \quad M(s)

\quad \quad \quad \quad \quad \quad \quad \quad \quad \quad \quad \quad \quad \quad \quad \quad \quad \quad \quad \quad \quad \quad \quad \quad \quad \quad \quad \quad \quad \quad Pure:
