Let us consider, atomic weight of metal is M

atomic weight of oxide is 16g/mol.

Let valency of metal is x

then, chemical formula = M_2O_x

so, molecular weight = (2M + 16x) g/mol

a/c to question,

mass percentage of metal = 2M/(2M + 16x) × 100

or, 0.6 = 2M/(2M + 16x)

or, 0.6 = M/(M + 8x)

or, 0.6M + 4.8x = M

or, 4.8x = 0.4M

or, M = 12x ......(1)

so, equivalent mass of metal = Molecular mass/valency

= M/x

= 12x/x = 12
