Let atomic mass of metal, M is A g/mol chemical formula of metal oxide is MO.

we know, oxidation state of O = -2

so, oxidation state of M = +2

so, equivalent weight of metal = A/2.....(1)

a/c to question,

The metal oxide MO contains 40% oxygen.

so, mass percentage of O = atomic mass of O/molecular mass of O × 100

or, 40 = 16/(A + 16) × 100

or, 1 = 40/(A + 16)

or, A = 24 g/mol , putting it in equation (1),

so, equivalent weight of metal = 24/2 = 12 g

hence, answer is 12 g
