P is CaO

Q is Ca(OH)₂

R is Cl₂

S is Ca(OCl)₂

Explanation:

  • We know that on electrolysis of Brine solution, at the anode, Chloride ion is oxidised to Chlorine gas (Cl₂)
  • Therefore, R is Cl₂
  • When R Cl₂ is passed over dry Q then compound S is obtained which is used to disinfecting drinking water
  • Therefore, the compound S can be bleaching powder [Ca(OCl)₂]
  • In this case the the compound Q which is a metal hydroxide will be Ca(OH)₂
  • Therefore, the metal oxide P will be CaO

The equations will be

CaO + H₂O → Ca(OH)₂

NaCl → Na⁺ + Cl⁻

Cl⁻ + Cl⁻ → Cl₂ + 2e⁻

2Ca(OH)₂ + 2Cl₂ → Ca(OCl)₂ + CaCl₂ + 2H₂O

The process of obtaining Cl₂ is known as chloralkali process

Cl₂ is used as disinfectant both for drinking water and swimming pool water

Cl₂ is used as bleaching agent

Hope this answer is helpful.
