A metal rod A of length 25cm expands by 0.05 cm when its temperature is raised from 0°C to 1000
Another rod B of a different metal of length 40cm expands by 0.04 cm for the same rise in temperature.
third rod C of length 50cm is made up of pieces of rods A and B placed end to end expands by 0.03 cm
heating form 0°C to 50°C. Find the length (in cm) of metal A in composite rod C.

Answer

From the equation of linear thermal expansion,

ΔL=LαΔT

0.05=25α

(100)

α

C

0.04=40α

2

(100)

α

C

Thus, for the combined rod,

0.03=x(2X10

−5

)(50)+(50−x)(10

−5

)(50)

50+x=60

x=10cm, 50−x=40cm

Answer is 10cm and 40cm
