A metal salt MX when exposed to light splits up to form metal M and a gas X2. Metal M is used in making ornaments whereas gas X2 is used in making bleaching powder. The salt MX is itself used in black and white photography.
(a) What do you think metal M is?
(b) What could be gas X2?
(c) Name the metal salt MX.
(d) Name any two salt solutions which on mixing together can produce a precipitate of salt MX.
(e) What type of chemical reaction takes place when salt MX is exposed to light? Write the equation of the reaction?

(a) The metal M is silver.

(b) The gas X2 is chlorine.

(c) The metal salt MX is silver chloride.

(d) The two salt solutions that precipitate silver chloride is sodium chloride and silver nitrate.

(e) The reaction taking place is decomposition reaction.

Chemical reaction:

2 A g C l_{(s)} \stackrel{\text {light}}{\longrightarrow} 2 A g_{(s)}+C l_{2(g)}

Explanation:

  • The silver is noble metal which reacts with chlorine gas to form silver chloride.
  • Silver chloride is majorly used as electrode in electrochemistry. It is used for extracting mercury while mercury poisoning. It is used in manufacturing of bandages and stained glasses. It is used as antimicrobial agent in deodorant and water tanks.
  • The reaction that gives silver chloride as precipitate is:
  • N a C l+A g N O_{3} \rightarrow N a N O_{3}+A g C l \downarrow
  • The decomposition reaction involves single reactant which decomposes to give two or more products.
