Metals placed above Hydrogen in the reactivity series is more reactive than Hydrogen so it displaces Hydrogen from its compound. Hence, metal liberate Hydrogen gas on reacting with water.

eg; Na + H2O = Na2O + H2

Zinc is the metal which reacts with both acid and alkalis to displace hydrogen

Zn +2HCl -->ZnCl2+ h2
Zn+ NaOH--->Na2ZnO2 + H2
