Answer:-

X = Magnesium metal (Mg)

Y = Hydrochloric acid. (HCl)

Explanation:-

According to given question, 'X' is a metal and 'Y' is an acid. 'X' reacts with 'Y' to produce Magnesium Chloride and Hydrogen gas.

So, from the products, we can easily get the reactants in which 'X' is Magnesium metal and 'Y' is Hydrochloric acid.

The chemical equation is :-

Mg(s) + HCl(aq) MgCl(aq) + H(g)

But we can see that the above equation is not balanced. On balancing it, we get the equation as:-

Mg(s) + 2HCl(aq) MgCl(aq) + H(g)

The above demonstration can be used to illustrate the charecteristic reaction of a metal with an acid, a displacement reaction [single], or to demonstrate the liberation of Hydrogen gas.
