Answer and explanation:

Given : A metallic sheet of rectangular shape with dimensions 40 cm by 30 cm. From each one of its corners a square of 4 cm is cut off. An open box is made of the remaining sheet.

To find :

(A) volume of the box formed

(B) cost of painting its lateral surface at the rate of rupees 8 per cm square

Solution :

A metallic sheet of rectangular shape with dimensions 40 cm by 30 cm.

From each one of its corners a square of 4 cm is cut off.

After cutting all corner o metallic sheet and form box by bending

Length l=40-4-4=32 cm

Breath b=30-4-4=22 cm

Height h=4 cm.

A) The volume of box is

V=l\times b\times h

V=32\times 22\times 4

V=2816\ cm^3

B) The lateral surface area of box is

LSA=(2\times22\times 4)+(2\times 32\times 4)+(32\times 22)

LSA=1136\ cm^2

The cost of painting is given by,

C=Rs.\frac{1136}{8}

C=Rs.142
