Answer: In the given sentence

'Life' is subjected to 'crystal stair' and implied that life is not like a crystal stair.

We all know life as it is, is no easy journey. There are ups and downs and so many risks on every path we go.

Crystal stair means easy path, smooth journey; but as we know life is not like that, it's far from a crystal stair.

Hence the 'metaphor' that life is not an easy journey.

By the way, a stair is something which you go on, to reach some destination.

Explanation:

The other words splinters, tacks, boards torn up suggest the adversities that pop up during the life's journey.

Life for me ain't been no crystal stair. Over here you can see that Life gets compared to stairs, it's saying her life ain't been easy like crystal stairs are. Crystal stairs give you a smooth easy and handy perspective. Other Metaphors such as Tacks and splinters, boards torn up suggest the hardships and pain the mother had to go through, we used these words because they explain hardships for example when you hurt yourself with a splinter it hurts..tacks makes you think perspectively about hazards.
