A milkman buys some milk contained in 10 vessels of equal size. If he sells his milk at rs 5 a litre, he loses rs 200; while selling it at rs6 a litre, he would gain rs150 on the whole. Find the number of litres contained in each vessel.

Let the milk purchased by the milkman be “x” litre at a rate of Rs. “y” per litre.

Case 1:

When he sells the milk at a rate of Rs. 5 per litre, he loses Rs. 200.

So, for x litres of milk, we can write the equation for-loss rate as,  

y – 5x = 200 ….. (i)

Case 2:

When he sells the milk at a rate of Rs. 6 per litre, he would gain Rs. 150.

So, for x litres of milk, we can write the equation for-profit rate as,  

6x - y = 150 ….. (ii)

Now, on adding the two equations (i) & (ii) from the above cases, we get

x = 350 litres

We are given that there are 10 vessels containing milk of equal size.

Thus,  

The number of litres contained in each vessel is,  

= 350/10

= 35 litres
