The complete question is:

A milkman made a profit of Rs. 89 by buying milk in equal quantity at the rate of Rs. 14 / litre and Rs. 12 / litre and selling milk at the rate of Rs. 13.50 / litre. How many litres of milk did the milkman buy?

Solution:

Since the milkman bought milks at different rates in equal quantities, let x litres of each type milk is bought.

• 1st type of milk is bought at Rs. 14 / litre

Then cost of x litres = Rs. 14x

• 2nd type of milk is bought at Rs. 12 / litre

Then cost of x litres = Rs. 12x

Total milk = (x + x) litres

= 2x litres and

the total cost = Rs. (14x + 12x)

= Rs. 26x

Again, milk is sold at Rs. 13.50 / litre

Then selling price of 2x litres of milk

= Rs. (13.50 × 2x)

= Rs. 27x

By the given condition,

Profit = Rs. 89

Then, 27x - 26x = 89

or, x = 89

Therefore, the milkman bought 89 litres of milk.

Given,

Profit = Rs 89

Selling cost = Rs 13.50 per litre

Purchase Cost = Rs 14 / litre of 1 variant

                               Rs 12/litre of 2 variant

Milk has been purchased in 2 variants of 14/litre and 12/litre.

Let the quantity of milk is assumed to be x.

Hence, Purchase cost  of the milk = 14x + 12x

Selling cost of milk = 13.50 (2x)

Selling Cost – Purchase Cost = Profit

Substituting the values into the above formula,

13.50 (2x) –{ (14x+12x)} = 89

27x – 26 x = 89

X = 89

Therefore, the milkman bought 89 litres of milk.
