he year was 2000, and Mr Jaitley sat with me for over an hour putting into perspective the evolution of the news space in India. He spoke, and I listened, trying to absorb everything that he so effortlessly and eloquently put together. That was the first of the many interviews that I would go on to do with him as I became a journalist and reported on the finance ministry, a ministry that he handled in the first term of the Modi government. Two months later, Mr Jaitley was proved right, as the BJP handsomely won the Uttar Pradesh assembly election in March. As the Congress kept making the same mistake in subsequent elections, the BJP kept reaping the advantage.
