There can be two ways as to how one can be visible -
Method 1: Look at what you can see in the mirror and figure out where your partner is looking in the picture relative to the image you can see. You can turn to be able to see him.
Method2: Walk near the mirror to see the room's style, then withdraw to make sure you see your friend in the mirror.
If the mirror is at your normal height and you are the same length from the mirror as your friend, you might have to stand on a chair to see.
