A mixture contains alcohol and water in the ratio 4:3. If 5 liters of water is added to the mixture, the ratio becomes 4:5. Find the quantity of alcohol in the given mixture.

Similarly let the amount of water be 3x.

Once 5litres is added..

Amount of water becomes (3x+5)

Therefore :

4x : 3x+5:: 4:5 [since 4:5 is the new ratio]

4x*4= 3(3x+5) [product of means= product of extremes]

16x= 9x+15

16x-9x=15

7x=15

Hence x=2litres.

The amount of alcohol= 4x

Hence quantity of alcohol= 4*2

=8
