Let the amount of chemical x be a.
The amount of chemical y will be :
3/4a
When we add 5 litres of y we now have :
(3/4a + 5) litres
The new ratio is :
a : (3/4a + 5) = 4 : 5
a / (3/4a + 5) = 4/5
5a = (3/4a + 5)× 4
5a = 3a + 20
5a - 3a = 20
2a = 20
a = 10 litres.
The answer is :
10 litres.
