A mixture contains three different substances X, Y and Z. They are of the same size, cubical in shape and yellow in colour. X particles are very heavy, insoluble, non-magnetic and contribute 50% of the mixture. Y particles are very light, insoluble, non-magnetic and contribute 40% of the mixture. And Z particles are iron pieces. Which of the following methods can separate X, Y and Z?
a)Winnowing, Magnetic separation b)Magnetic separation, Winnowing
c)Sieving, Magnetic separation. Filtration d)Handpicking, Sublimation, Sieving

Magnetic separation and winnowing can separate the mixture containing X, Y, and Z.

  • First the least amount of iron pieces can be separated using a magnet i.e. Z from X and Y which are nonmagnetic.
  • As magnet will attract only the iron pieces and get stuck to it.
  • Winnowing is used to separate lighter elements from heavy elements, as the heavy particles will remain whereas the lighter particles will collect at a different place by wind.
  • Therefore this will separate X from Y (light) leading to the separation of all 3 constituents.
