A mixture of C2H4,CO,N2 gases having total pressure 250mm of Hg in which 250mm Hg of O2 is added at 27°C and then sparked.After the system is brought to its original temperature total pressure becomes 370mm Hg.If partial pressure of CO2 is 200mm Hg then calculate initial partial pressure of C2H4

The partial pressure of C2H4 is equal to 50 mmHg .

Explanation:

  • Let's suppose the three gases are x,y, and z respectively.
  • x + y + z  = 250 mmHg
  • The equation is
  • C2H4 + 3 O2 ------> 2CO2 + 2H2O
  • (2x + y) + z + [ 250 - (3x + y / 2) + 20 = 370

The equation for carbon dioxide gas is

CO  + O2 -----> CO2

- x + y / 2 + z = 100

2x + y = 200

From equation (i), (ii) and (iii) we can conclude that

x = 50, y =100 and z = 100

The partial pressure of C2H4 = 50 mmHg
