Ethyne est un composé carboné non saturé. Il brûle dans l'air avec une flamme suie. C’est une combustion incomplète car l’oxygène disponible dans l’air ne suffit pas à brûler complètement le carbone. Par conséquent, pour une combustion complète, de l'oxygène pur est nécessaire, ce qui brûle le carbone et l'hydrogène en produisant une flamme très chaude et propre, propice au soudage. Il n'est pas possible de générer une température aussi élevée sans oxygène pur.
