A mixture of O_2 and gas 'Y' (mol. wt. = 80) in the mole ratio of a:b has mean molecular weight 40.

What would be mean molecular weight, if the gases are mixed jn the ratio b:a under identical conditons?
(gases are non- reacting)



(a) 40

(b) 48

(c) 62

(d) 72

as we know mixture of oxygen and gas y have

molecular weight of O2 is 32

molecular weight of gas Y is 80

and the mean molecular weight is 40

under identical condition when there is a: b

(32xa) + (80 x b)/ a+b = 40

32a + 80 b = 40a + 40b

80b-40b= 40a-32a

40b= 8a, a=40b/8,

a=5b...........(1)

when there is b:a

(32b+ 80a)/a+b

putting the value of a

32b + 80 (5b)/ a+b

32b + 400b/ 6b

432b/ 6b = 72
