A monk has a very specific ritual for climbing up the steps to the temple.
First he climbs up to the middle step and meditates
for 1 minute. Then he climbs up 8 steps and faces
east until he hears a bird singing. Then he walks
down 12 steps and picks up a pebble. He takes one
step up and tosses the pebble
over his left shoulder. Now, he

three at a time which only takes him 9 paces. How
many steps are there?

Answer:

49 steps

Step-by-step explanation:

Let say there are  2n+1  step

Middle step will be n+1  step

After climbing 8 steps monk will be at n+1 + 8 = n + 9 step

Monk after walking down 12 step = n + 9 -12  = n -3 steps

After taking one more step = n-3 + 1 = n -2 step

Further steps taken = 9 * 3 = 27

He will be at step = n - 2 + 27 = n + 25 step

2n + 1 = n + 25

=> n = 24

2n+1 = 2*24 + 1 = 49

There are 49 steps
