A monkey and an apple are hanging by an extensible light thread that passes over a smooth fixed pulley. Can monkey catch the apple if their masses are equal ?

No. The monkey and the Apple's mass are equal. So if the monkey starts climbing, acceleration is produced in the string. Since mass of both the entities are same,same acceleration will be produced on Apple's side which will prevent the monkey from grabbing the apple
