A total of 41 hours is needed by the monkey to reach the top.

Given,

This monkey has to climb 40 ft.

Each hour, it hops 4 ft and slips back 3 ft.

To Find,

The total time would it take the monkey to reach the top.

Solution,

Each hour it goes up 3 feet and slips back two feet.

So it climbs only ( 3 feet - 2 feet = 1 foot) one foot in one hour.

So in 40 hours, it climbs  40 feet .

Finally, in the next hour, it climbs 1 foot. reaching the top.. so total 40 + 1 = 41 hrs.

Hence, A total of 41 hours is needed by the monkey to reach the top,
