Concept:

Refractive index( μ) is the value calculated from the ratio of the speed of light in vacuum to that in another medium of greater density.

Wavelength(λ) is the distance between two successive crest or trough of a wave.

Given:

wavelength of light in glass slab λg = 400 nm

wavelength of light in water λw =500 nm

refractive index of water μw = 4/3

Find:

we have to find the value of refractive index for glass.

Solution:

The refractive index for medium is  given by

μ = c/v      where, c = speed of light in vacuum, v = speed of light in medium.

also, v= fλ where v is frequency and λ is wavelength of light

from the above two formula we  have

∴ μ ∝ 1/λ

μg/μw = λw/λg

∴ μg = λg×μw/λg

        = 500× 4/ 3×400

        = 5/3

Hence the value of refractive index for glass will be 5/3.
