A monochromatic Ray of light is incident at 37° on an equilateral prism of refractive index 3/2. Determine angle of emergence and angle of deviation. If angle of prism is adjustable,what should it's value be for emergent Ray to be just possible for the same angle of incidence.

The value of angle of emergence and angle of deviation should be 36.5° and 26.5°

Explanation:

Sin (i)/Sin (r1) = μ

Sin 37°/ μ   = Sin (r1)

3/5 x 2/3 = Sin (r1)

r1 = Sin^-1(2/5)

   = 23.5°

r2 = 60° - 23.5°

    = 36.5°

Now

μ = Sin e /Sin r2

Sin e = 3/2 x 0.59

Sin e = 0.891

      e = Sin^-1 (0.891)

      e = 62.99

      e = 63°

S + A =  i + e

S = (i + e) - A

S = 26.5°

Thus the value of angle of emergence and angle of deviation should be 36.5° and 26.5°
