Answer:

The maximum time to hit the target is 4.9sec

Explanation:

Given that,

A mortar shell is fired at a ground level target of 400m distance with an initial velocity of 85m/s= > u=85m/s.We are required to find the maximum time to hit target(i.e,Time of flight).

The horizontal distance is nothing but range.Hence,R=400m

Let the angle of the projection be \theta now the relation for the horizontal range is R=\frac{u^{2}sin2\theta}{g}

Substituting the given values in the above relation,we get

400=\frac{85^{2}sin2\theta}{9.81} = > sin2\theta=400\times\frac{9.81}{85^{2}} =0.543\\= > \theta=16.44^{0}

The relation for time of flight is given as

T=\frac{2usin\theta}{g}

Substituting the known values in the above relation,we get

T=\frac{2\times85\sin(16.44)}{9.81} =4.9sec

Therefore,the maximum time to hit the target is 4.9sec
