Moss plants produce a large number of male gametes to increase the chances of fertilisation, as the eggs are located in the archegonium and the male gametes have to swim in water to reach the eggs for fertilisation to occur. The male gametes are called antherozoids.

Bryophytes and pteridophytes require water as a medium for reproduction. Egg or the female gametophyte remains intact within the mother plant.Male gametes have to be released into water, swim along with the help of water droplets and reach the female gamete to fertilise it.
Male gametes are susceptible to many dangers during the travel to reach female gamete. Hence, they are produced in large number by Bryophytes and Pteridophytes.
Male gametes are produced in antheridia and are called as sperms.Female gametes are produced in archegonia and are called as eggs.

Male gamete is motile whereas female gamete is non-motile.There is a need for medium through which male gametes move. In bryophytes and pteridophytes, water is the medium to which male gametes are released and they move so as to reach the female gamete for fusion.A large number of male gametes, however ,fail to reach the female gametes. To compensate this loss of malegametes during transport, a large number of male gametes are produced.
